Good to Know

Before You Travel to Mongolia

Important information for international visitors. Your guide will brief you on arrival, but please read this before you book.

Visa & Passport

  • Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after arrival.
  • Many nationalities can enter visa-free, but rules change — check with a Mongolian embassy before booking.
  • Staying longer than 30 days? Register with the Immigration Agency within 7 days of arrival.

Money

  • The local currency is the Mongolian tögrög (MNT).
  • Cards are widely accepted in Ulaanbaatar; carry cash for the countryside, where ATMs are rare.
  • Exchange money in the city before heading out.

Weather & Packing

  • Hot days and cold nights — even in summer, temperatures in the Gobi and mountains can fall close to freezing.
  • Pack layers, a warm jacket, sun protection and sturdy walking shoes.
  • Weather can change quickly; your guide may adjust the day's plan for safety.

Health & Safety

  • Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is mandatory on all our tours.
  • Medical facilities outside Ulaanbaatar are limited — bring any personal medication you need.
  • Drink bottled or boiled water only.

On the Road

  • Expect long drives on unpaved roads — days can be bumpy and dusty.
  • Bring motion-sickness tablets if you need them.
  • Ger camps usually have shared bathrooms; facilities are simpler in remote areas.

Phone & Power

  • Buy a local SIM at the airport or in the city; signal can be weak or absent in remote areas.
  • Mongolia uses 220V with Type C and E plugs.
  • Charging at ger camps can be limited — a power bank is very useful.

Local Customs

  • Don't step on the threshold when entering a ger, and move around inside clockwise.
  • Accept food, drinks and gifts with your right hand (or both hands).
  • Always ask before photographing people, homes or religious sites.
